SKI AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. WHEN DO I CHOOSE?

SKIING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES: WHEN DO I CHOOSE?
I HAVE 2 CHILDREN: ONE WANTS SKI AND THE OTHER BASKETBALL, WHAT DO I DO?

Up to a certain age Skiing combines to some extent just fine with other sports. Not just because there are no racing obligations but because all sports have something to offer each other. How does Volley or Judo for example have to do with Ski and vice versa? We would say Volley for the development of agility and Judo for its resilience and Ski respectively for its balance which is useful for all sports. There are complementary sports such as Water Skiing and Skiing that may technically differ but use similar muscle groups, balance, rhythm and coordination training is essential and much more if we want to go deeper. Until a certain age it is legitimate for children to go through different sports even at the same time, not only because it is good for them but also to find their inclination. But at some point they have to choose if they want to be involved in a sport. When is this crucial moment? It is around the age of 11 that things start to get “serious”. It is the moment when they start to enter competitive categories and so, if they do not do the proper training they will be left behind..not that they could not fill the gap and beyond..but this will be more difficult. Yes, at this age they are not physically fit and especially girls have many hormonal changes so in the comparison it will be seen later who wins due to physique and who does not but do not forget that Ski is a technical sport and every route counts. This does not mean that they have to stop doing any other sport but it means they have to focus their strengths and training on one. The demands increase as they ascend to a competitive category so by the age of 13 they must have decided which sport they will follow.

The issue is complicated when in the family one child chooses Ski and the other e.g. Basketball. We are not talking about Basketball and Football where the child does not need to move from his base for training so the family stays together and covers the options of both. But in case one child wants Skiing and the other Basketball it would be unfair for both children, one to back off for the other’s choice. So the solution would be either the family to split in two or find a way for one to stay alone (with someone in charge eg eg grandmother) at home or the other to go up the mountain alone (with someone in charge or with his team). Some, in order to keep the family together would decide based on the performance between the children in their sport. However, this would not be fair again. No one course is right to be based on prophecies regarding evolution nor should the results be an end in themselves. Everyone who chooses to follow a sport does it primarily because he loves it and fills it, that is, he does it for the sport or at least that is how it should be. There are solutions, so to speak, some more difficult and others easier. Possible solutions may not be ideal for the whole family many times, but surely the decision must be made fairly for each member.
